Virginia Lee Mackey

April 10, 1931— January  7, 2004

Beloved

Wife, Mother and Friend.

Rose From Virginia’s Garden

Virginia was born to George and Nadine Poh in Santa Maria, California, in between her older  brother George and younger sister Janet (Vigil).  The Poh’s were a strict loving family,  early and faithful supporters of the Foursquare Gospel.

Virginia’s early years were spent in Torrance, California. When she was younger she was known to be a bit of a “tomboy”.  Her brother George had a friend named Jimmy Mackey he met doing paper routes.  Over time Jimmy started seeing more of Virginia than George which led to a marriage on April 20, 1951, two sons, Doug and Scott, and a baby daughter  who passed shortly after birth.

Shortly after World War Two, Jim and Virginia set their eyes on Nevada City.  They purchased a piece of land and “hand-built” a cabin on Blue Tent School Road.

Times were hard and eventually they were forced back to southern California due to economics.

Once back in Southern California the young couple began to prosper.  Virginia raised the kids and helped Jim with his business.   Virginia made sure her children got the best education possible.

For many years Jim and Virginia owned and Virginia managed, one of the top three U-Haul dealerships in the nation in Redondo Beach, California.   After selling the business and moving to Placentia, California,  Virginia  became an executive secretary for several years.

Then came a few years in San Jose, California where Virginia owned an antique store.  They finally made the move back to Nevada City.   Property owners since 1953, most vacations were taken driving to and from Nevada City.  .

Getting involved in Real Estate, Virginia earned her Real Estate License in 1975 and her Brokers license a few years later.   Virginia was Realtor of the year in 1993.

One friend  always called her “beautiful”, and she is in so many ways.  An example to all, in all she did.  Her ethics and integrity were unsurpassed.   Her patriotism too, as she would get a tear in her eye as she would join in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” even to the television.  She set up the judges booth year after year for the  for The 4th of July and The Constitution Day parades in Nevada City.

Virginia never sought the spotlight, she did things to get them done, not to be seen.  It was very difficult to get her in the carriage when she was honored as Grand Marshal of the Constitution Day Parade, (yes she set up the judges stand before  and took it down after).  She did tell Jim “this isn’t so bad” after they started down the street in the parade.

Virginia was a vital part of Mackey Real Estate and in the lives of friends and family, for Virginia “it isn’t so bad” now!
